If you are developing a product for sale nationally you will need to have a bar code registered and  generated for your product. Bar Codes or UPC codes register data which can be uploaded into a computer program using a bar code scanner.

Bar Codes were first introduced on a pack of Wrigley’s chewing gum in 1974. Bar Codes are issued by GS1 US a not for profit member driven organization that also develops worldwide standards for bar codes. They can be a little pricey starting around $750 plus a yearly fee to renew.

There are many standards to follow, not only developed by GS1 US but also by the retailer your are selling to. Be sure to ask your buyer what those standards are for placement and size. As far as the rest of the standards the best thing I can do is to send you right to the source. http://www.gs1us.org/ once you have registered with them they will give you a list of numbers that you will use for each of your products.
