The Guide to Going Viral – Advice from Jonah Berger

 Contagious

Thanks to Fast Company for releasing this exclusive excerpt from Jonah Berger’s latest book, Contagious: Why Things Catch On. These are six easy-to-learn, easy-to-share ways for your business to earn the audience that it needs to thrive.

6 “STEPS” To Making Ideas, Products Go Viral

“Contagious products and ideas are like forest fires,” Jonah Berger writes. “They can’t happen without hundreds, if not thousands, of regular Joes and Janes passing the product or message along.” Here are the qualities he says make things sharable (this excerpt series covers the first ‘S’).

  • Social Currency: We share things that make us look good (even if that means pictures of our cat).
  • Triggers: Easily memorable information means it’s top of mind and tip of the tongue.
  • Emotion: When we care, we share.
  • Public: Built to show, built to grow.
  • Practical Value: News people can use.
  • Stories: People are inherent storytellers, and all great brands also learn to tell stories. Information travels under the guise of idle chatter.

Social Media Revolution: Facebook Reaches 1 Billion Users

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

Facebook now has 1 billion users. That is a “1″ followed by nine zeroes. My goodness.

Many writers place this milestone in the context of how the company’s shares are growing. Not me.

A social media user transforms him- or herself into a commodity. They then market themselves. Let’s say that you own a business. You could pay a fixed rate to advertise in a periodical or on a billboard. But you’re advertisement is static.

These same resources are better spent in social media. Just imagine: a self-propagating promotion achieved through the subtle science of social media. In example, take two facebook users. They have a similar age, gender, intelligence, and background. What they don’t have in common, though, is a similar approach to social media. One user happily posts pithy witticisms, while the other user has a facebook page just to have one. The former user propels their popularity forward, the latter user waits for popularity to come to them.

When it comes to your business, revenue is a popularity contest.

Social Media Gives Teens Vital Business Skills

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

The teenagers busily tapping their touch-sensitive cell phone screens are writing ad-copy. They don’t even know it, but they are refining a business skill that may be harvested in years to come. Parents and older passers-by may glower at these “connected” youths. To older generations, social media seems like a useless activity; often have I heard people lament that artificial online relationships are replacing vital face-to-face interactions necessary to succeed later on in life.

Older generations are in for a shock.

Social media has become the preferred method of advertising, of marketing, of educating the consumer about products and services. And who better trained to perform these tasks then the generation weaned on them. Kids today, having cell phones and computers before they are teenagers, have been performing these duties for years, gratis. These children have been sharing articles and products and videos with multitudes of people, in essence doing the marketing for companies. Market research (demographics) is built-in to social media sites such as facebook. Cross-promotion free-of-charge occurs via tweet within seconds.

Good riddance word-of-mouth, hello word-of-keyboard.

A New Look For Myspace

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

myspace logoYou may remember Myspace when it was popular a few years back, but it has lost the social media battle to Facebook and Twitter. Now, Myspace is revamping their entire website since Specfiic Media bought the company a year ago. The new Myspace is looking to bring a new user experience and hopefully revitalize their popularity. In order to log-in to Myspace you will use your Twitter or Facebook account and you can transfer information and photos from those accounts. Myspace has always been strong in their music aspect and their revamp keeps that same focus. It has a very artsy interface and the entire website seems to go after the creative niche of musicians, designers, and filmmakers. There are even discussions about Myspace TV and whether or not they will have their own music service. (more…)

Creating an influential brand that stands out is not an easy task. It requires hard work and endless amounts of trial and error. What is it exactly that makes one brand so much better than another? That is not a simple question with just one answer, it really depends on so many elements and how they all work together. There are plenty of well-known companies today that are perfect examples of great branding. Let’s take a look at a few brands that have created praise-worthy campaigns.

Oreo

Oreo recently reached their 100th birthday and in celebration released their birthday cake cookies. They have also had cookies in the shape of Elvis and with red cream and track marks for the Mars landing (seen above). These physical changes to their cookies from time to time are a fresh way to stay competitive and a very effective branding technique. (more…)

Why Your Business Should be Tweeting

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

Twitter may not have as big of an audience as Facebook, but it is still an equally important platform for businesses to utilize. Creating and using a Twitter account gives you free access to an audience of several million people, that alone should get you tweeting. But just having an account is not going to do you much good, you need to understand how to use it in order to grow your business.

1. Build Awareness
If you want to get recognized and increase awareness of your brand, Twitter is a great way to do this. It works for any company as it costs no money and is user-friendly. In order to accomplish this, you need to build a loyal following. This is easier said than done of course, but you can start by following others in hopes they will follow back. Another thing you can do is tweet interesting content and attach the appropriate hashtag at the end of your tweet. For example, you may post a joke about summer and at the end you should type #joke #humor #summer. That way, when someone searches for any of those terms, they may stumble across your tweet and decide to retweet it, follow you, or both.

2. Build Community
Once you have a solid audience, it is a good idea to stay in touch in order to keep them around and possibly bring in more followers. Reply to tweets, retweet on a daily basis, and create updates that promote discussion. Twitter is used to share thoughts, ideas and information with one another and helps bring like-minded individuals closer together. Understand your audience and what they want so you can share information they will find worth reading.

3.Increase Viral Potential
Since Twitter is so easy to use and share information, it gives your words more potential to be spread. All it takes is a click of a button for someone to share a tweet with their followers. Taking part in Twitter discussions can help your business reach millions of people at a very fast rate.

4.Promote Sales and Blog
Although Twitter is perfect for sharing news and fun facts, it should also be used for promoting your business. Share your blog posts, sales, coupons, and any company news. It is the best way to keep your customers updated and stay fresh in their minds. Let’s face it, businesses aren’t using social media just for fun, they want to connect with people in order to encourage a sale. Twitter helps you do just that by driving more traffic to your website to hopefully gain you more customers and business.

5. Learn & Gain Insight on Competitors
Other than talking about your own business, you can find out a lot of information by reading tweets. Your competitors will be posting their news and sales, so keep an eye on them and see what they are up to. It is also a good way to stay current on industry trends and business news overall.

There are millions of people on Twitter everyday so don’t miss out on this large audience. Be consistent with your updates and put forth the effort to truly connect with your followers. It may take time, but it will be worth it in the end.

Don’t forget about customizing your Twitter and other social media pages. Adding background images to your Twitter page and Cover photos to your Facebook and Google+ page will help set you apart from everyone else. If you don’t know how or don’t have time to design one yourself, we can do it for you. Visit CimettaDesign.com and contact us for a consultation.

3 Metrics to Improve Your Facebook Page

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

Facebook metrics

If you have a page on Facebook for your business, you probably have tried gaining more likes and attempted everything to attract more people. Well, in order to optimize your Facebook page, you should be taking advantage of the metrics given to you. In order to see this information you must first be on your Facebook page and click the settings dropdown menu right under your cover photo. Then click on ” View Insights” and a new page will open up showing all the traffic and statistics for your page. There you can analyze the results and come up with ways to improve your strategy. Here are a few things you should be looking for.

1. Engaged Users
This is the amount of people who click on your posts. Look at which posts are more engaging and see what similarities they have. Maybe you had a better call to action or an interesting question that made people want to respond. See which posts received the least traffic and try to find out what you did wrong. It is possible that there is a more popular time-frame or a particular topic that sparks more interest. Notice the patterns and act accordingly.

2. External Referrals
This section can be found under the category “Reach” and shows how people found your page. Your website and search engines should be the most popular on this list. If you need more optimization you can try a few things.

  • Fill out your about section completely using specific keywords. This will make it easier for people to find you through search engines.
  • Add social media icons to your business website and your blog. Also, putting your social media on your e-mail signature will help spread the news even faster.
  • Make sure you advertise your Facebook page on multiple websites other than your own. Guest posting for other people is a great way to go about this. It attracts their audience to your own blog and if you add a link to your social media page you can generate more likes too. Other ways to get the word out is by putting it on business cards, telling your customers and clients about your page, and exchanging information at webinars and events.

3. Talking about this
This number represents the number of people who either share, like, or comment on your post, or interact with you in some way. It is a great way to see how interactive your fans are and if you need to post more interesting content. This score is also important because everyone else can see this number, so if it is low, it may reflect negatively upon you. The best way to raise this number is by provoking conversation and encouraging feedback. Post a funny photo or take a survey. The more engaged people are, the higher your score will be.

There are many other numbers and metrics you can see on your Insight page, but if you pay attention to these three first, it will steer you in the right direction. Remember to keep an eye on these and monitor them frequently. The moment you fall behind is when your numbers begin to dwindle.

Inbound Marketing On A Schedule

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

inbound marketing on a schedule

We have mentioned numerous times that Inbound marketing is critical, but in order to use it correctly, you need a schedule that works. Planning ahead makes things run faster, smoother and gives you better results. Keeping a calender and daily schedule is a must, but there are many ways to go about it. There are 3 different levels that you need pay attention to when it comes to keeping a schedule for your marketing: Daily, Weekly, and Monthly tasks. Read more below.

Daily
The day can go by fast and before you know it it’s 5 o’clock and you still haven’t accomplished half of what you needed to. It doesn’t have to be that way and the main way to change this is to keep a tight schedule. If you make a habit of creating a daily to-do list (whether it is on your phone, computer, or hand written) things will seem to get done a little faster. A general daily to-do list may look something like the one below.

1. Check Analytics
If you have great results then see how you can do what you are doing even better. If your analytics show weak areas, change things up in order to see improvement. You should be checking the analytics for your main website, blog, e-mail campaign, and social media. The most important thing to check is where your leads are coming from. Once you know that, you can see how to make your message more targeted to this group and how to gain the attention of those currently uninterested.

2. Filter Through E-mails
You want to check your e-mail early in the day and figure out what needs attention and what can wait. Don’t let the e-mail pile up or you will end up getting lost. If you typically receive a large quantity of e-mails everyday you may need to create folders in order to keep things organized.

3. Prioritize tasks
Make a list of what needs to get done during the day and what is the most important. Once you tackle something, cross it off and move on. There are many websites that can help you organize your list digitally. Read one of our older blog posts 5 Tips For Organizing Your Daily Tasks to help with this.

4. Update social media
Go through your notifications and respond if necessary. Then add your thoughts or some pictures and take a few minutes to interact. Make sure to check back throughout the day when you get a free minute or two. After awhile you may find that at certain times you have a free minute that you can schedule for social media. For instance you may want to physically put on your list to post on social media at 10am, noon, 3pm, and 6pm. This way it will become a habit and will push you a little more to stay on top of it.

5. Publish new content
Content is the center of inbound marketing. If you aren’t updating and adding new content periodically you will put yourself behind the game. This means adding interesting and relevant content on your website, blog, and social media. You may not have time to add something daily, but if you aren’t staying consistent with your updates it will have a negative effect on your business.

Weekly
& Monthly

Weekly you should assess the same tasks as you do daily with a few additional items added to it. Look at the analytics for the past week and see if it improved. You should also do a weekly scan of your e-mail folders and delete anything that you have already taken care of or don’t need anymore. Update your to-do list and see if you can improve your task completion process. Once the basics are assessed, look into the additional tasks below.

1. Guest posting
This is an effective way to get better SEO and gain a bigger audience. Find a blog that relates to your field, but is not in direct competition with you. See if they would feature your content on their blog. This way you can “borrow” their audience and hopefully attract them to your own blog. Since someone else has a link to your website, it will also help your Google rankings. It is also a good idea to feature other blogger’s posts on your blog in order to spice it up from time to time. This can be done weekly or monthly. Just remember, don’t post duplicate content. That means if you write a blog post for someone else, don’t post it on your blog as well and vice versa. Doing so will negatively affect your ranking.

2. Change-up your style
Other than guest posts, there are other ways to offer something different to your audience. Write about a topic you don’t normally discuss, add pictures, videos, or even DIY projects. What you add will all depend on your industry and the type of business you have, but the point is that you want to get creative with it. Do the same for your main website and social media. Try a new technique and see what type of results you get. Try a new promotion or ad, start up a newsletter, find out what you haven’t done and try it out.

3. Connect With Others
Every so often you should take some time to reach out to other bloggers, people on your e-mail list, or participate on forums. This can be done every weekend or maybe a few times a month. The more time you spend on it the better, but it is just important you make up some type of schedule. You should be commenting on blogs, offering advice on LinkedIn discussion boards, sending out e-mail newsletters, and connecting to people on your social media pages. Adding your own content is important, but commenting and interacting with others is just as important.

4. Group Meetings
You might hate meetings, but having a weekly or monthly meeting can help things run a little smoother. Getting everyone together will allow you to discuss what has been done already and what still needs to be implemented. Everyone needs to be on the same page and ensure there is no miscommunication. Make sure that you have an outline of what will be discussed before going into the meeting. That way you can stay on track and avoid going off topic. After the meeting everyone should know what their job is and have a goal to reach.

5. Get Extra Training
If you can, once a month you should do something to strengthen your skills or learn something new. This can be done by attending seminars, joining business groups, or going to events. Not only is it important to do this for networking purposes, but it can help you become a better business professional. There are always things we can improve upon and skills we can learn, so take the time every so often to better yourself.

Extra Tips

If there are nine rabbits on the ground, if you want to catch one, just focus on one.
– Jack Ma
Basically, tackle one task at a time. Work may be overwhelming and it may seem that everything is coming at you all at once, but you can still only do one thing at a time. Don’t panic when work gets chaotic. Instead, make a plan and stick to it. Focus is key, so don’t get distracted by everything going on or else you won’t be able to even get one task completed.

Never confuse motion with action.
–Benjamin Franklin
Understanding this alone can increase the amount of things you get done everyday. For example, you could be tweeting all day long, but if it is not engaging or attracting anyone, it won’t be very effective. Plus, you don’t want to spend too much time on one thing. If you tend to spend most of the afternoon on the phone talking to customers and don’t have enough time leftover for other activities figure out a way you can cut that time down.

Everyone’s marketing plan is different. You need to continually test your strategy to see what works and what doesn’t. No matter what kind of business you own or work for, it is always crucial to make a schedule and stick by it. It may take awhile to get used to, but once you get in a rhythm you can accomplish a lot more than you might expect.

5 Reasons To Start A Mobile Push Blog For Your Business or Organization

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Mobile Push Blogs 101 - Add it to your Internet Marketing Strategy
Ok, so what is a mobile push blog?  It’s a blog medium that is pushed out to your mobile subscribers, who have chosen to opt-in to receive your content.

The blog is on a mobile optimized site and the user is connected by receiving a linked invitation via text message.  We’re suggesting that you consider supplementing your online blog with one of the mobile varieties to increase your readership.

1. Numbers don’t lie.  It’s commonly known that 97% of texts are read and of those, 90% are read within 30 seconds.  Who doesn’t want that kind of sense of urgency when it comes to blog readership?

2. Push vs. Pull, which is better?  The best is a combination of the two.  When we go to the gym and lift weights we seek to work out our upper body.  Think of your blog in the same way.  Push exercises are used when you push a bar or dumbbell away from your body and pull exercises are when you pull weights towards your body.   Push exercises are typically used for chest and shoulders and pull exercises are typically used to work out our backs.  We all like the pull mechanism of an online blog because it helps our search rankings and reach new people.  The push mechanism of a mobile blog is valuable because no one has to search for you.  The blog conveniently comes to the reader and they will appreciate that.

3. Mobile Push blogs are easier to swallow.  Typically a push blog is two paragraphs or less, or a total of 12 sentences.  When users are on their cell phones they want to get to the point.  They are in between destinations and want content that is easy and accessible rather than the deep thinking of an online blog.

4. Instill permanence in your message.  When users visit our online blogs, typically the user reads the content and closes out the window.  When we use the text message invitation for a mobile push blog, the text message remains in the phone until it is deleted.  Many people don’t delete their text messages immediately so your push blog invitation will stay for a while.

5. People are asking for it.  Just like some users will ask to subscribe or receive alerts when new blog posts arrive, mobile push blog subscribers are inviting your message into their phone.  Being invited into someone’s phone is like being invited into their home.  If your client or prospect asked you to visit their home would you turn down the invitation?  I’d hope not.

Reaching your current and prospective clients and building credibility can be a daunting task.  If you’re looking for assistance in broadcasting your message in a new and innovative way RoyalText.com can certainly help you.  We provide a fully managed solution by helping to increase your number of mobile subscribers, writing and designing the mobile blog posts, and designating a successful long-term mobile strategy.

This article was written by Robert Livingstone of www.RoyalText.com.  RoyalText establishes, manages, and grows mobile campaigns for various industries.  In addition to mobile push blog, other managed features include digital coupons, polls, contests, and much more.   It’s a fact that we can’t live without our smartphones, but now you know how to monetize it.

LinkedIn Offers Targeted Status Updates

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

LinkedIn infographic

LinkedIn had a recent breach where thousands of passwords were stolen. According to LinkedIn, if you had one of the accounts that was compromised you should have received an e-mail notifying you and allowing you to reset your password. Hopefully LinkedIn has followed through with what they have stated and have fixed the security breach. Other than passwords being stolen, there is other share-worthy news going on with LinkedIn. When you post a status update you will be able to target it to specific individuals based on their seniority, job title, geography, company size, industry and employee tenure. This feature will help get your message out to the people you intend it for instead of just a general audience.

Since April, fifty companies have used beta-testing on this new feature and so far it has successfully increased followers and participation. These targeted statuses are available with LinkedIn’s new Follow Company program. This program allows companies to pay a fee for each follower and choose what type of audience they want. Once they have purchased these followers, they can freely send them as many updates as they want. LinkedIn is continually working on new services and updates and will be adding more to their program pertaining to mobile.

If you aren’t using LinkedIn you should definitely sign up and start participating. It’s a fantastic source for networking whether you are looking for customers, searching for a job, or need to fill a position. There are discussion boards that allow you to connect with people and exchange information. Now that they are adding new features and offering more opportunities to target specific individuals, LinkedIn should become even more useful to businesses everywhere.
